11th June: Chiang Mai – rest day 2

The route: http://connect.garmin.com/activity/189144453 – up to Wat Phra That and back down again – 41km – 5694km total

Monks enjoying the view

The chat: Although Emma (and her knees) had been promised no more hills, the views from the top of Wat Phra That came so highly recommended we rode the 1000 vertical metres despite the crunching noises emanating from the offending joints. The views were indeed sublime, stretching over Chiang Mai to the hills 80km away, and the Wat itself was pretty impressive too, if tonnes of gold leaf and gilt is your kind of thing.

En route to various bike shops (we needed a new cassette and chainring) we popped into the enormous Chiang Mai University – leafy and spacious – before heading back to the ‘burbs to find the ‘proper’ night market for some proper Thai market food.

Shiny happy people

This sculptor clearly didn’t have an Oedipal complex
