Question : When is getting a bus while bike touring not cheating?
Answer : When you’ve already ridden the (rather boring) route in the other direction
Well, that was what we told ourselves anyway. The prospect of a 2 day 200km trudge back up to North Laos on the same route we’d come down to drop into Luang Prabang was not an appetising one. Add in some rather menacing thunderstorms and our decision was made – local bus. The 6 hour journey was pretty unexciting, apart from when Andy heard a loud thunk and looked out the window to see one of our panniers (strapped, clearly not very securely to the roof of the bus) fly past his window as the bus careered along at 80km/hr. Oops. Luckily it was a pannier without the laptop/camera/andy’s speedos so the blog/photos/unsettling swimwear shots will continue – panic not readers!
Oudomxay was definitely not a destination town. We stayed in an unexciting room, ate an unexciting meal, and spent a romantic night with pillows clutched over our heads trying to drown out the noise of our neighbour hacking and spitting – a popular pastime among men in Laos and Vietnam.
